I’ve Been Robbed!
Posted by Melissa at 2:37 pm in Tea & Movies

Ok, not physically my home or person, but certainly emotionally. I’ve been watching the BBC series, Bally Kissangel. In the series, there is a love triangle involving a priest and a married woman. How do the writers resolve the issue? (WARNING! SPOILER ALERT!) they kill off the married woman and the priest leaves town. Ack! I’ve just reserved season 4 to see what happens next.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, I baby sat my sister’s house and her little dog too while she and her family went up into the mountains for a bit of fun. I enjoyed a movie marathon of 8 in two days. Let’s see if I can remember them all: Dan in Real Life- fair, National Treasure Book of Secrets-LOVED IT!, Nancy Drew (yes, I know but still)-fair but made better because of all the vintage stuff in the movie, Silk-didn’t like it, The Jan Austen Book Club-didn’t like it but I did enjoy the young guy comparing her books to Star Wars movies. It is totally something my Tech Hubby would do if he knew who Jane Austen was. P.S. I Love You-liked it, okay. Bawled my eyes out which was only fueled by the fact that T.H. was out of the country and I was missing him terribly. Can’t remember the last two right now but I’ll blog about them when I do. When was the last time you enjoyed a movie marathon? What did you see?

Cranford is making me cry!
Posted by Melissa at 7:24 am in Blogging, Hospitality, Stuff, Tea & Movies

I watched the second installment of Cranford last night on PBS and almost flooded the house with my tears.

I love Judy Dench. Honestly, if I saw her on the street in the city where I live, I would drag her to my house for tea and scones just so I could visit with her. Actually and ok, I know it sounds odd but hey, how is that different form any other day for me? -you have seen those posters of of James dean, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart and the like sitting at the counter of the corner diner, right? Well, I would have something like that in my living room with Kathy Bates, Helen Mirren, Judy Dench, Maggie Smith, and Nora Ephron all over for tea. Maybe we would all be glammed up, or not, but heck, even if we were in blue jeans and button downs, it would still be a  kick in the pants, fun thing to do!

Who is your favorite actress or writer or fictional character you would like to have to tea? What would you discuss?

A Confession or Two
Posted by Melissa at 12:26 am in Blogging, Etiquette and Manners, Food, Tea & Movies, Writing

I love sci-fi. Not all of it, mind you, as it can get hokey if not done correctly, but I love, love LOVE! Stargate Atlantis. For me, it is THE BEST ever sci-fi show. I enjoy it even more than SG-1. I know that without SG-1, there may not have been an Atlantis, but I don’t care. I think Atlantis is funnier and better written than SG-1. I have lost more fingernails to Atlantis (nail biting-literally!) than I can count.

Here’s a LINK to the site.

My other confession? I am totally wrapped up in a Korean ’soap opera’ right now, titled; Dae Jang Geum. I have written about this one before on my blog. I don’t care that it’s in Korean and I have to read subtitles (for several days now, for hours on end, much to the dismay of my husband) the dvd set is a 14 day check out from my library and I finished it in three days. I would have been done sooner but I had to stop for home group. It is a three volume set with 54 episodes! Whew! Here’s the wiki LINK for that one. Why do I enjoy it so much? The ladies all look meticulous and wear lovely dresses in pretty colors. I have enjoyed allowing myself to be immersed in the lives of the characters. There are many, many fabulous scenes of palace cuisine being prepared. There is unrequited love, devotion, murder, betrayal, sacrifice, deep and loving friendships, and love. There are many scenes of people gathered around lavishly appointed tables of food and tea enjoying themselves and each other because food is not just something to keep your blood sugar up, oh no, it is an event!

This series emphasizes the effects food can have on your emotional and physical health. You even get to learn about how different foods and medicines can work together to heal or harm a person. If you haven’t already watched this show, run out and find it and make the time commitment to enjoy it. If you enjoy tea and cooking and great drama, you’ll love, Dae Jang Geum as much as I did.

Bee Movie Gets a D-
Posted by Melissa at 4:57 pm in Misc., Tea & Movies

I’ve JUST returned from seeing Bee Movie (there’s 90 minutes of my life and $5.75 I’ll never see again). Starring, Jerry Seinfeld, Rene’e Zellweger and many other talented actors including John Goodman who was type cast yet again as a verbally incontinent, angry, loud, fat man (see Evan Almighty, Brother Where Art Thou). I think John Goodman is a fine and talented actor. I would love to see him play a different character once and a while. I would really love to see him as a love interest in a movie.

Rene’e  Zellweger and Jerry Seinfeld both shined as the voices of a bee, Jerry, and Vanessa Bloom, Rene’e.

I thought Dreamworks did it again. Their animation was superb as usual. The movie was a visual delight. So why did I only grade it a D-?

Right in the middle of the movie, it became preachy and anti-white people which surprised me. If the movie had attacked black people in this same manor, we would already have sound bites from top leaders in the black community crying out about the stereotyping of black people, etc., etc.

I do not like how the movie vilified bee keepers and tried to make it sound like instead of producing, buying and selling honey, people were engaging in human trafficking, or in this case, honey trafficking. It’s HONEY for Pete’s sake.

The bees in nature had a sweet pad/hive, the bees on the farm lived in little bee slums in squalor. Give me a break!

the movie would have been great if it would have just stuck with the theme of the main character wanting to individuate himself from the hive and have choices but no-o-o-o, they had to go and get political, over honey.

If you want to make a movie with a political message, go for it, but don’t make a cartoon that’s supposed to be about bees and turn it into pseudo, wanna-be-intellectual-so-I-can-appear-deep, movie.

Tea and Movie Review-Miss Potter
Posted by Melissa at 11:02 am in Tea & Movies

Yes, it was in theaters a while ago and has been out on dvd forever , but I finally got my grubby little hands on a library copy and watched it over the weekend. I loved it. The only thing I didn’t like about it was how the two main, single, female character’s hair looked awful! I know they had combs in the Victorian times, so why did Millie and Beatrix have to look like something the cat dragged in?

I did enjoy the tea scenes and had fun trying to figure out who made some of the tea sets. One was a Wedgwood, and the pattern is still active!

So, if you like stories about people following their dreams despite other’s expectations for their lives and you want to see a great love story, rent Miss. Potter and enjoy it while you sip.

Time for a tea and movie review
Posted by Melissa at 1:01 pm in Tea & Movies

Today’s movie is Open Range starring Kevin Costner, Robert Duval and Annette Benning. Set during the 1880’s old west, this movie is about the friendship between men, men who get the job done (in this case some butt whopping and cattle herding) and yes, there is a bit of a love story between Costner’s character and Benning’s though there could have been a bit more in my opinion. There is a funny tea scene that ends up leading the viewer to one of the most touching scenes in the movie. At first, I wasn’t too sure about this movie. I thought it was just going to be manly, bloody and violent but by the end, I was cheering for the courage it takes to love and be loved especially when you’ve almost given up on it ever being in your life.Check it out, I think you’ll like it.

The Buccaneers
Posted by Melissa at 8:19 am in Tea & Movies

The Buccaneers. This is a 1995 BBC production staring, among others, Mira Sorvino (Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, The Replacement Killers, Mimic, etc.). It follows four young American women on their quest to get married during the Victorian era.

There is drama and romance and ruin as well as beautiful scenes of them having tea picnics on the lawn and grand vistas of the English country side as well as lush interiors of the mansions inhabited by societies finest. So, put the kettle on and grab a box of your favorite biscuits and spend the afternoon being enchanted.

Macaron
Posted by Melissa at 6:13 am in Food, Tea, Tea & Movies

I did it! I made macarons last night. It was completely necessary as Colorado Springs has no place at all where I can purchase these little yummy tea treats. How else was I supposed to experience them if not by making them myself? I EVEN blanched my own almonds. Whew! It was a tough process and I ended up with batter all over my hands as well as a bowl full of butter since I decided to make a chocolate ganache center for the pastries instead of the traditional butter cream which just sounded too complicated at 8:30. 9:00 o’clock at night. All in all, it was worth it.

Once in a while, you just have to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. Just because you can.

To see these little darlings in action, rent the movie ‘Wives and Daughters’. Macarons are big at tea time.
