A Skewed View
Posted by Melissa at 9:37 am in Activism, Resources

Or, don’t get your scripture from t.v. The ladies on The View were discussing the bible this morning, and of course, getting it wrong. Whoopie said there was nothing in the bible that spoke out against homosexuality. She must not have ever read Leviticus or Romans. Just because it’s not in the ten commandments, doesn’t mean it is ok to do. This is where our country is, and will continue to head, in the direction of skewing the bible and twisting scripture so that it mimics our life style instead of the other way around. We are to conform into the image of Christ, not distort the image of Christ to justify our sin.

So, Whoopie, here is what the bible says about homosexuality. It’s not genetic.

Romans1:26-27

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Leviticus 18:22

22 ” ‘Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

What Obama has Said
Posted by Melissa at 7:05 am in Activism, Blogging, Media, Politics, Resources

Here is a very good piece written by Terrence P. Jeffrey on Obama’s ‘Christian’ views. If you do not now what Obama has said, please take a moment to read this and be a bit more informed on what this man thinks and believes, especially if you are a Christian who is thinking about voting for him. Remember, when you vote for someone for president, you get all of their ideals and beliefs. If you agree with 10% of what he says, you are still getting 100% of his changes however unjust or unconstitutional they may be.

Obama: Sermon on Mount Justifies Same-Sex Unions

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told a crowd at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, Sunday that he believes the Sermon on the Mount justifies his support for legal recognition of same-sex unions. He also told the crowd that his position in favor of legalized abortion does not make him “less Christian.” LINK to full story.

Stacy L. Harp
Posted by Melissa at 3:30 pm in Activism, Blogging, Politics, Resources

I had the pleasure of sharing time and lunch with a lady whose work in Christian activism I admire, Stacy L. Harp. She is one of the voices of reason in the often, maddening and illogical din of those who work toward getting special rights and privileges for persons living the homosexual lifestyle.

We need more people in the Christian community to speak out and have their voice heard. We are being too compliant, standing by silently while our rights and constitutionally (used to be) guaranteed freedoms continue to be stripped away.

Please go to her site and read about the truth.

I’m headed off to finish up some things for home group tonight.

Reading Chesterton has been surprisingly difficult. I’m not merely talking about the differences in past writing styles to today’s writing styles or the references to people and things of Chesterton’s time that I keep having to research like a term paper. I rather enjoy reading Chesterton in the ‘original Klingon’ as my husband would say about such writings, and I also have enjoyed looking up the things and people he mentions. I can almost feel my brain cells expanding. No, none of that is really what is weighing heavily upon my heart.

What troubles me the most, is that, we are not learning from our mistakes. We are repeating history, to our detriment. It is not surprising so much as it is disheartening. Christians know who the god of this earth is. His reign is limited as is the time he has left. Those who do not know this, continue living as if their lives have no eternity, no consequence. They believe they are, ‘lining large’ in their sin and that those who follow Christ are small. Small minded, small hearted, tiny in their understanding of worldly things. Oh, they could not be further from the truth.

Insights to chapter three.

1. Enjoy the small things. They really are what make life worth living. Assignment? Romanticize something that you would normally view as mundane. Read chapter three and figure it out for yourself.

2. I cannot say it better than he, so here is a quote from Chesterton from chapter three,‘The evil of militarism is not that it shows certain men to be fierce and haughty and excessively warlike. The evil of militarism is that it shows most men to be tame and timid and excessively peaceable. The professional soldier gains more and more power as the general courage of a community declines. Thus the Pretorian guard became more and more important in Rome as Rome became more and more luxurious and feeble. The military man gains the civil power in proportion as the civilian loses the military virtues. And as it was in ancient Rome so it is in contemporary Europe. There never was a time when nations were more militarist. There never was a time when men were less brave. All ages and all epics have sung of arms and the man; but we have effected simultaneously the deterioration of the man and the fantastic perfection of the arms. Militarism demonstrated the decadence of Rome, and it demonstrates the decadence of Prussia.’

The word, America, could very easily replace some of the other references to countries.

3. How large, or small, is your world?

Once again, Muslims are some how able to circumvent the laws in a nation, gaining special treatments outside of that nations laws that actually allow the Muslims to commit crimes against other non-Muslim citizens in the name of their religion. Some how, it is now a hate crime (I hate that phrase) to evangelize to Muslims in designated, ‘Muslim areas’. The Muslims in Britain have their own ‘area’?! Here is the LINK to the story.

Remember yesterday I told you about the shop next door to HoC? Here it is…Savory!

What is it about hard wood floors that is so charming? The two things HoC and Savory have in common is that they are both located in older buildings, charming thing #1, and they both have hard wood floors, charming thing #2. Tile floors feel too cold, clinical and utilitarian. Maybe that is why I feel like I’m walking into a vet or hospital when I enter stores with tile floors. Wood floors seem to say ‘Welcome, you are now a part of history and intertwined with all the other people who have walked across me over the many years past.’ Tile floors seem to say, ‘hurry up and get out’.

I immediately felt welcomed and comfortable upon entering Savory. I was greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable woman by the name of, Shantelle. I quickly felt like a welcomed guest.

As you can see from the above pictures, they have quite a selection. You can buy a little or a large amount of each spice. I purchased a few 1/2 and 1 ounce packets to sample and see if I wanted larger amounts later. I have already used my Capital Hill Seasoning Blend to make omelets yesterday. I love the dried shallots in the blend. Last night, I sprinkled some of the Paris Cheese Sprinkle blend on fresh popped popcorn. What a delight! I also made off with a jar of vanilla sugar, a packet of black sesame seeds, the Tarragon Shallot Citrus Seasoning, Lemon Grass, and a Cambridgeshire Celery Seasoning. I already have recipe plans for the Tarragon seasoning but I can’t reveal them just yet. A word of advice on the vanilla sugar. It does contain real bits of vanilla bean. If you are going to use it in your tea or coffee, I recommend adding it to your beverage in a separate vessel and decanting it into your cup or different container from the first, while pouring the liquid through a fine mesh strainer, a tea strainer to be exact as my kitchen strainers have too large of holes to effectively keep the vanilla bits from getting into my cup. The bits aren’t an issue when they are small, but when they absorb the liquid from your drink and swell, it’s a bit unsettling (for me any way) to have them get stuck in your teeth. It is, however, well worth the tiny bit of extra effort to strain the bits. Think of it as a Zen exercise if it helps.

Savory also has a a myriad of salts, curries, extracts and sauces just to name a few of the wonderful things you will find on their website and on their store shelves

Savory can ship your order to you, you don’t have to drive to Denver or Littleton in order to fulfill your need for exotic spices and adventurous cooking. One quick phone call or computer click and soon, you will be your own Mistress of Spice.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Democratic Sen. Barack Obama on Friday called for higher payroll taxes on wage-earners making more than $250,000 annually, a step that would affect the wealthiest 3 percent of Americans…

By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer

Continued at the link.

So, Obama is already targeting white Americans, talking about policies and tax increases that would mostly affect white American males who are once again, being punished for their entrepreneurial skills and successes. Obama’s proposed payroll tax is not only unfair to white American males who make up most of the 3% richest Americans (while $250,000 is certainly nothing to sneeze at, it doesn’t exactly put a person in the ranks of a Rockefeller) it is also unfair to those who make $250,000 on their own. Those person in double income households that meet or exceed the $250,000 threshold with their combined salaries, will escape this most unfair and blatant form of discrimination and punishment. Is Odama encouraging mediocrity among the working and middle class? Example:a person could go for that promotion, but if it would kick him into a higher tax bracket, he could decide to back off a little and let someone else take the hit rather than pay higher taxes as a punishment for his ambition. Some would say that it is his choice not to go further in his career, I say the payroll tax handcuffs don’t really give him much of a choice. This is especially bad news for families living on a single income such as one parent is staying home to raise the children or a single parent trying to make ends meet with daycare costs, rising gas prices, rising food costs, etc. Just because a person makes $250,000 doesn’t mean they are living on easy street and should be punished.

Increasing taxes is not a cure all when budgets get tight yet that is the first place many in office look when the spending gets tough, the week raise taxes. Why not cut back on unnecessary spending? Do we really need all of these government funded programs?

Here, in the city in which I live, we are facing some serious budget issues. Will city and local government officials release their spending receipts from the last few years so that cuts may be made to secure the budget and the future of the city. Of course not. Instead, the city is proposing to sell off our parks to builders in order to raise enough cash to balance the budget along with a 1% sales tax increase. Everyone else has to live on a budget, why not the people who are running the city (into the ground)?

Obama, we don’t want a president who targets minorities, even if they are rich and white. Your proposed tax increases are discriminatory.

While at Aunt Barbara's home, she fed us home
made bread from her bread machine and this
wonderful gooseberry preserves from Hero, a
Swiss company. I'm usually a strawberry or
plum kinda gal when it comes to things I like
to spread on bread. Although nothing really beats
Nutella, this new-to-me flavor definitely comes in a
close second.

To you and I, a teacup may be a vessel for a lovely hot beverage, a dessert cup, even a basin for a flower arrangement, for Kimberly Shaw, they are works of art that adorn her own works of art and appear on the most precious, heart touching stationary and cards, I think, the tea world has ever seen. Each card has a matching tea bag so that the recipient can imbibe in a cuppa while reading your words of congratulations, comfort and/or encouragement.
Why not visit her Flicker site where you can see how she grew from a one woman art/craft project at Christmas time, to a warehouse full of boxes of tea and cards designed and painted by her. I hope this post gives encouragement to someone out there embarking on a journey of turning a passion into a profit.

Christine, Tea and Me
Posted by Melissa at 1:27 am in Food, Inspiration, Painting, Resources, Stuff, Tea

I met my friend Christine at

I had Aged Earl Grey tea (whatever the aged part means) from Numi and a piece of quiche, not too good. Tasted kind of rubbery and was cold in the middle. Then, when my friend arrived, I had a chocolate chunk scone that was stale. She had a bagel.

It didn’t matter though that the food was only so-so, what mattered was that I was getting to visit with my friend and hear all the wonderful things, God has been doing in her life. If you’ll remember, Christine is the lady who taught me how to paint and in whose cookie tasting panel I had the honor of participating. Well, her cookies are taking off and the orders are coming in! Woohoo! I’m so excited for her! I though that perhaps her success had been over night when I was lamenting to her how slow things have been for me in getting started in what I feel the Lord wants me to do. Come to find out, she was given the cookie idea 5 years ago by the Lord and things are just now going from the ether of a dream to where she is walking in it however new and scary. She say things may have gone faster had she listened more carefully to what the Lord was trying to tell her but she also said she has learned a great deal on her journey. Her most powerful lessons seem, so far, to be in the arena of letting go of perfectionism. How many of us can relate to that? If we wait until all the lights are green before we start our journey, we may never reach our destination. Now, I’m not saying a person should not have a plan. What I am saying is that one must be flexible enough to let go of that plan or change it should the Lord lead one in a different direction.
