So, the t.v. fast ended on Oct. 11th. You may or may not remember my church was doing a 40 day fast which included fasting from television. In the middle of all this pre-election excitement and anxiety, no less! I was mocked and ridiculed by family members for still watching a few movies or the occasional You Tube video, but let me tell you, picking what you want to watch vs. having trash thrown at you is very, very different. Sure, I watched Pride and Prejudice and Vanity Fair, a few Stargate Atlantis Season 5 clips off You Tube here and there, but wow, what a shock it was watching actual television for the first time in 40 days!
In the course of two hours, I was exposed to a woman committing suicide in a bikini, the burned out forensic characters making tasteless jokes about the dead at her expense, a character that was a man but had an operation to ‘turn him into a ‘woman” sent to a women’s prison even though he is still a man, and then heard him referred to as, ’sister’ and ‘daughter’, then I watched as on another show, one female character was giving another female character pointers on how to be a lesbian, saw a man with no face and the implication that a young boy saw this and was not traumatized, on top of all that, there were all kinds of commercials trying to convince me that in our very depressed economy, I could not possibly live without this store’s useless garbage or that fast food restaurant’s very-bad-for-me, nasty meal.
Guess what? I haven’t missed any of it. It was garbage 40 days ago and it is garbage now. Did I have an earth shaking transformation experience while on my fast? No. Did I start to glow in heavenly light? No. I do, however, feel better as if a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I lost some actual weight (I was hungry the entire time I was watching t.v. tonight!) and I made some new friends.
Is there something in your life you thought you could not live without? When I first went on this t.v. fast, I thought I would lose my mind, I was so bored. I don’t knit or crochet. I didn’t do much writing since I write in the mornings and would watch t.v. at night. It was hard for me to give up t.v., but I’m glad I did and it doesn’t look like I’ll be ‘picking’ it back up again any time soon. In what are you imprisoned? What is your automatic response at night when you come home? What do you do to unwind? Why not take a good long look at it? Is it healthy? Does it add quality to your life or your family’s life? Does it bring you closer to God? Now, I know not every activity will do that for you, but if your, ‘vice’, if the thing you do keeps you from your family and God, has it become your pet sin? You idol? If you can’t, or will not, go 40 days without it, maybe it is time to rearrange your priorities.
I really like what Katherine had to say today about praying for your nation for the short remainder of the election. I also, really, REALLY, like the idea of community prayer. Can you imagine, all of the saints praying together at the same time, flooding heaven with our voices? I’m getting all goose bumpy! here is Katherine’s post. ‘See’ you tonight at the prayer meeting! Please, pass it on.
Oopsy! I forgot to give Katherine her (props) today. Katherine owns the lovely blog, Yellow Rose Arbor. Please, do go and visit her and say, ‘hello’!
This election has the world in an uproar, but we as Christians have got to seek God for the answers.
This is the scariest election we as Christians have ever faced. From the looks of the polls, the Christians are not voting Christian values. We all need to be on our knees.
Do you believe we can take God at His word? Call upon His name, then stand back and watch His wonders to behold. This scripture gives us, as Christians, ownership of this land and the ability to call upon God to heal it. I challenge you to do so. We have never been more desperate than now for God to heal our land. This election is the scariest I remember in my lifetime.
We know the power of prayer, but if we don’t call upon His name, nothing will change.
JUST ONE MINUTE EACH NIGHT….
Do you believe we can take God at His word? Call upon His name, then stand back and watch His wonders to behold. His scripture gives us, as Christians, ownership of this land and the ability to call upon God to heal it. I challenge you to do so. We have never been more desperate than now for God to heal our land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 : If my people, which are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
During WWII, there was an advisor to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England, its people and peace. This had an amazing effect as bombing stopped.
There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America. The United States of America and our citizens need prayer more than ever!!!
If you would like to participate: each evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time, 8:00 PM Central , 7:00 PM Mountain, 6:00 PM Pacific, stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, for peace in the world, for wisdom and courage for our leaders, the up-coming election, and that the Bible will remain the basis for the laws governing our land and that Christianity will grow in the U.S.
If you know anyone who would like to participate, please pass this along.
Someone said if people really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless. Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have.
Please pass this onto anyone who you think will want to join us.
If you forget to pray at this time, pray whenever you think of it!
God Bless You!!!
Thank you!
Katherine
